Customers needed for $10,000 MRR

What founders who did it say about pricing

"a rule of thumb that can be broken is often if you can save someone a million dollars a year, then you charge one tenth of that, 100,000 a year"

Rob Walling, Startups for the Rest of Us, Episode 847

"only 3% of free users will upgrade to the Premium plan let's take an example let's say you have a free plan and a $10 per month plan that means your average user is worth 30 cents to your business"

Marc Lou, Why your side project makes $0 (at 1:08)

"If you offer multiple tiers —and you probably should— your customers should be encouraged to buy the more expensive tier whenever their value metric figures increase significantly. They win, you win"

Arvid Kahl, Pricing for Calm SaaS Businesses

"for SaaS, for software where you’re running servers and providing an ongoing service each month, this is the worst idea ever. It’s the worst idea since Greedo shooting first. Do not do it. It ruins your exit multiples if nothing else, but it also doesn’t allow you to create business over time"

How it works

Questions

How many customers do I need to make $10,000 a month?

Divide your monthly revenue goal by your monthly price. At $29 a month you need 345 paying customers for $10,000 MRR. At $99 a month you need 102. The price you charge changes the size of the job more than anything else.

How do I work out how many signups I need?

Divide the paying customers you need by your signup-to-paid conversion rate. Marc Lou puts free-plan upgrades at about 3%, so 345 paying customers would take about 11,500 free signups. A paid trial or a paywall usually converts far better than a free plan.

Why does churn matter for my MRR goal?

Customers who cancel have to be replaced before you grow. With 345 customers and 5% monthly churn, about 18 customers leave every month, so you need 18 new paying customers a month just to stay at your goal.

How should I price my SaaS?

Start from the value you create, not your costs. Rob Walling's rule of thumb is to charge about a tenth of what you save the customer each year. Arvid Kahl suggests tiers tied to a value metric, so customers move up as they get more out of the product.
